Responding to comments made by the Public Health Minister, Shona Robison MSP, regarding the Scottish Grocers’ Federation (SGF) Healthy Living Programme, whose success has inspired the launch of a similar programme in England, SGF Chief Executive, John Drummond, said,
“I warmly welcome the Public Health Minister’s comments. The SGF Healthy Living Programme, has, with the support of the Government, improved the availability of healthier food options to communities through the convenience store sector.
“Ross Kerr, Health Living Programme co-ordinater, and his team, have made a concerted effort to recruit independent convenience stores, with particular focus on stores in low income areas.
“As well as the initiative encouraging shoppers to eat their 5 A Day, participating stores have registered an average increase in sales of fresh fruit and vegetables of 20% to 30% since the start of the programme.”
